The name AGMARK is a portmanteau of the words agriculture and certification mark, as in, certification of an agricultural product. This is a third-party certification of the quality of the produced agricultural commodities designed for the betterment of the consumption of common people.

Concerned Department

AGMARK, in layman’s terms, is the standardization of qualities approved by the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection, a special office adhered to the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Govt. of India.

History

The idea of this was first devised by Archibald MacDonald Livingstone, who was an Agricultural and Marketing adviser to Govt. of India (1934- 1941) around the year 1934. AGMARK is enforceable in courts by the Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) Act of 1937, which was later amended in 1986. The AGMARK head office is situated at Faridabad, Haryana.

Covered Items & Testing Factors 

As of now, about 225 items ranging from various pulses, fruits, vegetables, meats, ground spices, edible oils, etc. are certified under AGMARK. The quality coefficient is determined by testing factors like chemical and microbiological analysis, pesticide and weedicide residue and aflatoxin analysis in various state-owned laboratories throughout the country.

Laboratories & Standards

These laboratories are present in 11 nodal cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Kochi, Guntur, Kanpur, Jaipur, Rajkot, Bhopal, New Delhi and Chennai apart from the Central AGMARK Laboratory (CAL) in Nagpur. The Standards for AGMARK, which is mostly voluntary except for edible vegetable oils and fat spread, are framed following the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
